Lose the Baggage

Our honorary Fruugalist of the day today is Doug Dyment, a guy who has taken a single topic and turned it into an entire site. His topic: ”The Art and Science of Traveling Light.”

It’s a narrow site about a not-so-narrow topic: the overstuffed bag, too many bags, and too much stuff while on the road.

If you are going to be on the road at all, and you have, um, issues with stuffing bags too full, then it’s probably worth looking at this site, or just spending a bit of time thinking about what you really need while on the road.

Now maybe you have some emotional issues about this, some baggage baggage. The time to deal with that is way before you begin packing.

Our hunch is that this site may help, but what will help most of all is to think about something other than the bag or the contents. Think instead about the people you will be seeing, the conversations you will be having. Think about the things that you will probably remember weeks or months or years later. Will it be what you wore?

Unless you are a person who recently got married in a ceremony in Brazil to a football star, chances are the answer is no. So just pack the thing that doesn’t wrinkle and can be worn in a range of settings, and then hit the road.

Speaking of hitting the road, it’s Friday, and you probably have a cocktail hour to get to soon enough, so we’ll end it right there. In future weeks we’ll look at some other ways to save money on the road, so be sure to send us your favorite tips. Thanks for reading, have a great weekend, and we’ll see you back here next week!
